Formaldehyde:-

Pungent, flammable, and colorless Smelling liquid has many uses, including as preservatives in the food and paint industries, processing in the petrochemical industry, and use as building material. It is essential to use formaldehyde-based resins with excellent binding and thermal resistance qualities when making plywood, furniture, and insulation.

Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas with the chemical formula CH₂O. It is the simplest aldehyde, consisting of a carbonyl group (C=O) linked to two hydrogen atoms. Formaldehyde can also exist in solution as formalin, a liquid form with a percentage of formaldehyde dissolved in water.

Uses of Formaldehyde:

Resin Production:

Wood Products: Formaldehyde is a key component in the production of adhesives and resins, such as urea-formaldehyde resin and phenol-formaldehyde resin. These are widely used in manufacturing plywood, particleboard, and other wood composite materials.

Textile Industry:

Fabric Treatment: Formaldehyde is used to impart wrinkle resistance and durability to fabrics, especially in the textile industry. It helps in creating permanent press fabrics.

Disinfectant and Preservative:

Biomedical Applications: Formaldehyde, in the form of formalin, is used as a disinfectant and preservative in laboratories, medical facilities, and mortuaries for preserving biological specimens.

Plastics and Polymers:

Plastic Production: It serves as a precursor in the production of various plastics and polymers, contributing to the manufacturing of a wide range of products.

Personal Care Products:

Cosmetics and Personal Care: In small quantities, formaldehyde and its derivatives are used in cosmetics and personal care products as preservatives.

Fertilizer Production:

Agriculture: Formaldehyde is utilized in the production of certain fertilizers and soil conditioners.
